I think a lot these personality thingies confuse a love for the outside with outdoorsiness, classically construed.
You Are a Hunter Soul
|

You are driven and ambitious - totally self motivated to succeed
Actively working to achieve what you want, you are skillful in many areas.
You are a natural predator with strong instincts ... and more than a little demanding.
You are creative, energetic, and an extremely powerful force.
An outdoors person, you like animals and relate to them better than people.
You tend to have an explosive personality, but also a good sense of humor.
People sometimes see you as arrogant or a know it all.
You tend to be a bit of a loner, though you hate to be alone.
Souls you are most compatible with: Seeker Soul and Peacemaker Soul

| End of Summer Goodness |

Yesterday, the roomies and I had the 'End of Summer Season' BBQ. It was a smashing success. I was a little nervous because it was a lot of new people meeting each other, but everyone got along, and lots of people pulled me to side saying "I want you to make sure that X person and I hang out more often." The quickest way to make friends is to feed them.
The menu was equally delightful.
Appetizers: grilled tater tots with grilled onions a cheese, crackers, and pastry tray
Main Dishes: curry cous cous salad, lamb chops in a mustard sauce, sweet potatoe quesadillas with a spicy pico de gallo
Dessert: grilled fruit with a peanut rum sauce Libations: All of this with a little beer, white wine sangria, limeaid, red wine
Now *that's* what I call a party.
Today: Lots of yummy leftovers! |

Has everyone seen this test?
I Am A: Neutral Good Human Cleric (4th Level)
Ability Scores:
Strength-13
Dexterity-12
Constitution-17
Intelligence-17
Wisdom-18
Charisma-17
Alignment: Neutral Good A neutral good character does the best that a good person can do. He is devoted to helping others. He works with kings and magistrates but does not feel beholden to them. Neutral good is the best alignment you can be because it means doing what is good without bias for or against order. However, neutral good can be a dangerous alignment because it advances mediocrity by limiting the actions of the truly capable.
Race: Humans are the most adaptable of the common races. Short generations and a penchant for migration and conquest have made them physically diverse as well. Humans are often unorthodox in their dress, sporting unusual hairstyles, fanciful clothes, tattoos, and the like.
Class: Clerics act as intermediaries between the earthly and the divine (or infernal) worlds. A good cleric helps those in need, while an evil cleric seeks to spread his patron's vision of evil across the world. All clerics can heal wounds and bring people back from the brink of death, and powerful clerics can even raise the dead. Likewise, all clerics have authority over undead creatures, and they can turn away or even destroy these creatures. Clerics are trained in the use of simple weapons, and can use all forms of armor and shields without penalty, since armor does not interfere with the casting of divine spells. In addition to his normal complement of spells, every cleric chooses to focus on two of his deity's domains. These domains grants the cleric special powers, and give him access to spells that he might otherwise never learn. A cleric's Wisdom score should be high, since this determines the maximum spell level that he can cast.

Happy Labor Day everyone! The trip to Boston is going well. I decided to look up more about the Sagitari, and was amused by this description. Whether it is true or not, I cannot say--but alas you all know me best.
"You’ll have ‘em eating out of the palm of your hand with your latest anecdote, exaggerating all pertinent details by a factor of 2.5 and punctuating your story with hand motions that should be studied by the cast of Fame. You’re innately confident. And why shouldn’t you be? Sagittarius is the centaur. From the waist up you exude the quick, sexy intelligence of, say, a Matt Damon. Below, you’re all stallion baby.
The centaur rarely trips, but that’s not to say that you don’t make your share of faux pas. You’ll rattle a friend with an offhand remark about his pleated khakis (“I’m surprised; those look ok on you!”) If you stop to notice the crestfallen look on his face (which you won’t) you’ll come right back and say something about how usually only the tall and the slim can pull that look off gracefully, and remind your friend that the pendulum is swinging away from the whole flat front craze anyway. What’s old is new again, right? Eventually.
And who could be offended? If you’ve indulged in a bit too much of foot au gratin, well, you’re just guilty of being you; which isn’t a crime, but maybe it should be. You call it like you see it because you don’t believe in hiding behind politesse, preferring to get straight to the heart of the issue. Your sign is the archer, after all. And people tend to forgive you because who likes a stuffy prude anyway? It helps that you’re generous to a fault, especially with hard cases and cute animals. You could never stand to see a teacup poodle peering out of knock-off handbag, or a friend in need of a night on the town.
And that’s just in your spare time. Sagittarians are the philosopher queens of the zodiac. Not so dreamy as the Pisces of the world, and not as flighty as a Gemini when it comes to doing the research, Sagittarians strike a nice balance between thought and action. You love the ideas but know that nothing exists in a vacuum. You get a lot of energy from engaging with the world and all its fascinating people. That’s where your lack of tact comes in great handy. Sagittarius is both opinionated and open to change at the same time. You’re not afraid to ask the stupid or insensitive questions if it means getting the information you need, and you’re not afraid to let your conversation partner know exactly where you stand on an issue. You know that it’s the only way to make progress, and heaven help the curmudgeon who stands in the way.
The times are gonna change, and those who ride the tide will have the most fun. You love people, but anybody who tries to hold you back from this simple philosophy invites a world of pain. Independence is your oxygen. You love travel, and for fun you’d be down to try any of those rugged-outdoorsy kinds of activities that involve scaling mountains followed by a refreshing five kilometer swim. Good luck with all that, Sagittarius. Just be careful. You are blessed to be one of the luckier signs on the zodiac, but be sure that your drive for exploration doesn’t take you into a situation you can’t get out of. Indulging in too much of anything is bad for the waistline and the pocketbook. Keep some stability in your life and you’ll be pushing boundaries for a long time to come. |

| The Wandering Soul |
|
|
| 02:13am 29/08/2008 |
| |
I've wandered to Boston/Cambridge/Somerville/other small towns to attend a conference, visit family, and see old friends. And yes, I did only go home (from DC) for just two weeks before leaving again. My sister was excited to hear that I was in town and phoned to make sure that I planned on actually spending time with the family. (As if I wouldn't have.)
A friend today remarked to me that it was 'obvious' that I was a Sagittarius, astrologically. Not knowing quite what she meant, but being infinitely curious, I asked her to clarify. There are three fire signs, she noted, and they all bear certain traits. Being possessed of a certain inner-fueled self-confidence, a flagrant individualism (bordering on narcissism), a generosity of spirit and enthusiasm, and a capacious intelligence are marks of a fire. Sagittari add to the mix: tactlessness (though not meanness), a strong positive or negative relationship to religion, and a need for constant travel and stimulation to the mix.
The other qualities may or may not describe me, but I do travel all the time too, and love it.
But I've thought about becoming more sedentary and trying to stay in one place. It's difficult for me to do so because of the reasons for which I travel. I often travel to either find adventure and see something new, maintain long-term friendships, or to get away from local people who are making my life less than happy. (Or some combination of those.)
I realized that I can't stay in one place if I don't have any reasons to stay--and as of now I have few reasons to be in Chicago when I have a lot of free time. Without family or loved ones, and no particular job requirements generating a need to remain, and enough of other people's personal drama spilling over into my life applying pressure to go, looking for my exit has become a top priority. (Right after getting my dissertation proposal done.)
This is sad because I would rather like to be rooted and stay in Chicago three to four more years--but it is increasingly looking like a swift departure (12 to 18 months) would be the more reasonable time table.
The good news is that I can attempt to return to the East Coast.
Ok, I've got to meet a friend for breakfast in six hours--gotta get to sleep after reading more stuff about the Democratic Convention. |

Your result for Which Chess Piece are You Test?... The King's RookCongrats! Only 4-7% of the population score this!
The King’s Rook is the epitome of the word ‘clever’. They are the professor who juggles ideas for papers and grants while joking with a highly entertaining lecture. They are stand-up comedians who are accurate with truths. They are quick with their brains and can love to argue if only to play devils advocate. Others should be aware that this can result in hurt feelings or confusion if you can’t handle debate for debates sake. This Rook is wonderful at finding short-cuts and performing mental gymnastics. They are fond of physical or intellectual toys – the more sophisticated the puzzle – the better. Tetris anyone? The King’s Rook is an optimist in addition to being clever. This can lead to them flying off the handle when inconveniences and setbacks occur (because they shouldn’t have.) They don’t have much patience for those who may come across as ‘wrong’ or even ‘unintelligent’. But in light of this they are genuinely friendly if not charming when life doesn’t harass them. They are experts in their own field – it is hard to win any debate they are passionate about – they most likely know the weaknesses and have that covered. When the Rook behind the throne is appreciated, they offer the King a large amount of flexibility and problem solving. If someone says 'it can't be done," rest assured this King's Prince is figuring out the solution to that challenge. They may have a problem with starting projects and never seeing them through. They may also be competitive and unappreciative of others contribution. Regardless, they are great at generating team spirit and using confrontation to their advantage. | Summer, Continued |
|
|
| 11:45pm 06/08/2008 |
| |
The summer vacation continues, and it has been a whirlwind tour. Also involved were many games of Imperial.
It all began with a plane flight to Philly to visit the Blair and his gaggle of acquaintances. Philly is always fun but will always seem a tad bit parochial (though not as small as Boston). For days, from party to party I floated, generally bored with the people around me. These social situations mostly consisted of people insistently clinging to the shallow end of the kiddie pool in their conversation, much to my chagrin. I of course had fun, but was not always amused as I could have been.
All was not lost, however. Friday and Saturday both brought interesting company. Friday was mostly notable for a random internet acquaintance, who when drunk acted similarly to Sig Nu brothers, continuously dropping his drinks and providing unintentional situational comedy. This was thankfully followed by a Bostonian with a very thick accent, so thick, that at times it wasn't recognizable English. He was a ton a fun and very charismatic. Saturday saw the return of another acquaintance first met over New Years, and his boyfriend who was awesome. He was 'post-butch.' Hanging out with them transformed the evening out into something magical and amazing.
Sunday and Mondays were my days for New York City. I had a lot to do and not a lot of time to do it in. In keeping with my travel luck, I missed my train to NYC and had to NJ Transit it over, shaving precious hours off of Sunday. Met up with JLZ for brunch (this place was awesome and had UFO on tap), RW for a post-brunch Upper West Side trek, and SW/SM for dessert. They were wonderful hosts. While I was there it dawned on me just how long it had been since I had seen them last, and I resolved to come and visit soon again. I missed each of them for very different reasons. The next brought breakfast with the lovely couple (and accidental consumption of meat-filled savory crepe), exploration of Columbia University , a surprised sighting of John McWhorter, and an afternoon stroll with IMii. Then I hurried down to Times Square to meet SK, and ran around Central Park with him. Of course I missed my train back, and had to take a later train to get to Philly.
Tuesday was go to DC day, and apparently, much to my surprise, almost everyone involved in said trip was surprised that I was coming due to a month old miscommunication. Not that getting to DC was without their own complications--Blair and I arrived to the train stations by different routes, and I had possession of his accidentally left behind phone--but the grace of God, and a little common sense brought every thing together at the last minute. A short and pleasant train ride later, we had arrived in DC. Miscommunicated travel plans quickly resolved, however, I find myself in DC with a lot to do before departure on the 13th. |

| A Different Saturday |
|
|
| 08:30pm 26/07/2008 |
| |
Today turned out a lot differently than I had planned.
I got to see my good friend for a few minutes today, which is nice. But other than that, this was an atypical Saturday.
First, my roommate's best friend has been visiting, which is awesome, but a different balance in the house than I'm used to. Second, my female friend (KE) with whom I was supposed to hang, ended up hung over all day. (Her real boyfriend came to rescue her, saving me the trip to Hyde Park.) Third, I was buying some stuff for another friend of mine that I don't usually buy: lipstick and a woman's tank tank. It is very awkward to shop in the women's part of the store. I had never done that before, and boy was it uncomfortable.
So what did I end up doing? Akward shopping, and then I rewarded myself with book shopping. I forgot how much fun I used to have hanging out at Borders. And then I came home after the book shopping prepared to make a homemade pesto for my pesto-brocolli gnocci dish. Might make some more cookies, since the others went fast.
Now I have to decide: Funky Buddha or no? |

I enjoyed the new Batman movie. Saw it on Tuesday for six dollars. Overall Tuesday was most excellent--definitely the best day of week by far as I pretty much had non-stop fun from 500pm to 2am.
The chocolate chip cookies that I made were a hit, and I ran out fast. So today I made chocolate chip peanut butter cookies. Robyn and I both love them.
Have two meetings in Hyde Park Friday, so no beach for me. (Been going to the beach every Friday.) But I am working on expanded world settings and story lines for my game (now in the d8 version), so that'll be nice. Don't know if I'm ever going to be able to make it to a DartCon again, but some things are good in and of themselves.
Lastly, been hitting the gym mostly every days for a few weeks now. Joined Bally's so that I wouldn't have to make the trek to Hyde Park to work out.
Also been hanging out more with George and Alice, which is always fun.
Vacation begins soon. I will have to hit the ground running when I come back, though, as summer is drawing to a close, and I am going need a stable circle of friends and companions to hang out and party with during the colder months. Gotta get every thing into place, and something tells me the conveniences and joys of the summer are soon coming to an end. |

Your result for The Lover Style Profile Test... The Romantic Lover59% partner focus, 57% aggressiveness, 40% adventurousness
Based on the results of this test, it is highly likely that: You prefer your romance and love to be traditional rather than daring or out-of-the-ordinary, you would rather pursue than be pursued and, when it comes to physical love, your satisfaction comes more from providing a wonderful time to your partner than simply seeking your own. This places you in the Lover Style of: The Romantic Lover. The Romantic Lover is a wonderful Lover Style, and is the hallmark of young love--the Romantic Lover often loves the idea of being in love, and being a wonderful lover, and so they try to bring their prospective partners every bit of joy or happiness that they can. They are the serenaders, and the ones to rent carriages in the park or take a gondola ride down a canal. The Romantic Lover is a treasure to find, though they sometimes are prone to being hurt if their advances are ignored or harshly rebuffed. In terms of physical love, the Romantic Lover can seem shy, but usually it is simply a by-product of wanting to be perfect for their lover, and often needs some extra encouragement and re-assurance to truly feel at ease. Given a special, intimate evening, and the right lover, the Romantic Lover can be a delight in bed. Best Compatibility can probably be found with: The Classic Lover (most of all) or the Suave Lover, or the Exotic Lover. Congratulations! If you enjoyed this test, I would love the feedback! I'm really enjoying the game(s) of Online Diplomacy I'm in, wish I had more people to play Imperial with...and I've gotten back into (outdoor) tennis.
And in the historical spirit of this journal, some more personality tests. (Don't have links, sorry.) Also, forgot how to do cuts...
YOU’RE A GREAT CATCH!
As a Great Catch, you’re just made to be in a committed relationship! Great Catches want to find their one special someone, and they actively look until they find that person. When they do, settling in is easy! You love the comfort and contentedness of being part of a couple. You love the idea of having that one person to share your days with – it makes you feel fulfilled! Great Catches are ready to go the distance to make the relationship thrive. When problems arise, they tend to dive in right away to repair them. They know that even the best twosomes can hit a bump now and then, but those hiccups can be overcome with some effort and time. For Great Catches, the rewards are worth the work. With this in mind, Great Catches are ready to commit for a lifetime!
YOU’RE A DETECTIVE!
Overall, you’re a Detective, with a mix of Keeper and DIYer. Just call you Sherlock Holmes! Detectives’ love of complicated concepts is reflected in the way they spend their free time. Detectives tend to like reading, chess, word games – anything that stretches their mental muscle. Science-related activities, mysteries, brain-teasers and Sudoku can keep you happy for hours.
Detectives would rather play with ideas than objects. Your natural curiosity shapes your hobbies and interests. You easily use both deduction and intuition to solve a problem – as long as you discover the answer, you’re satisfied.
The part that’s a Keeper leans toward structure and boundaries. This side makes people better at paying attention to fine details.
A DIY side makes a person yearn to have something to show for their efforts. DIYers love hands-on activities, like tinkering or cooking.
Detectives can find a great partner in any of the Interests types, but tend to work best with other Detectives, as well as DIYers and Artists.
Get some action: On the outside, Detectives might seem to lean toward quieter activities. Don’t let appearances fool you! You can release your inner action hero in an online role-playing game or by losing yourself in a great mystery. Shoot the aliens! Find the buried treasure! A world of action is just a click or a page away.
Hidden treasures: Detectives love discovering new things. Why not turn that talent inward and discover a new side of yourself? You may have hidden skills as a dog trainer or a gardener. Test out your fledgling talents by joining some one-day volunteer events for the Humane Society or the local arboretum.
YOU’RE A CRUSH!
Crushes tend to fall in love easily. When you meet someone you really like, you get butterflies – it’s hard to keep emotions in check. On the inside, Crushes could be head over heels, but on the outside, Crushes keep things light so they don’t come across too strong too early. You’re an incurable romantic, but you will look to a partner for a sign before you express your feelings. Still, Crushes tend to dazzle their partners, so for a partner full of passion, people love to date a Crush!
Crushes let their hearts lead the way in romantic relationships. You’re quite the romantic; you probably love dates with a sentimental mood. But while Crushes love to go on those dates, you have a harder time thinking up ideas for them. In a new relationship, you tend to keep your true feelings to yourself until you’re more certain. It’s easier to take your time before getting your hopes up. You like to get to know someone before getting in too deep romantically. |

The journal recorded that I updated last 24 weeks ago. "2008-01-27 18:49:52, 24 weeks ago"
'Them was different days.'
Let's see, what I was doing 24 weeks ago? Amusingly enough, some of the same things I am doing now:
(1) Desperately trying to figure out what to do about the "Love Triangle" (as one of my friends calls it) that I found myself in.
January answer: Plan a month long, multi-city vacation. (most of March: San Francisco, Philly) July Answer: Plan a two-three week, multi-city vacation. (late July through mid-August: DC, New York, Philly, New Jersey, and North Carolina) *and* be more open about my feelings/ think about the future of this thing
(2) Wondering about the political future of the country as well as plan my own presidential run
January Answer: Pray that Sen. Clinton wins; argue with the roomies July Answer: Wonder what happened; lament with the roomies
(3) Think about the gym routine that stopped after Halloween 2007 (due to factors related to reason 1) January answer: lament the lack of gym time and study for comps July answer: actually going back to the gym **yay progress!**
(4) Try and get motivated to write a paper that was due in December January answer: apply for conference and study for comps July answer: working up motivation for two papers and read for dissertation
(5) Wonder why some friends I stayed in contact with whereas I didn't with others January answer: wish for a personal assistant to help me keep my social life organized/ hang out with Chicago friends July answer: actually begin calling people again
(6) Work on the game I'm writing January answer: Wonder why I liked Matty G's adaptation of the game world July answer: Create a spin-off world with 4 gods and 6 races on the d8 system
(7) Wondered whether I needed more or new friends January answer: Purge! July answer: Vacation and more exercising at the gym and using the digital camera a very close friend gave me (woot!)
Gosh, the more things change the more they stay the same. I would resolve to update more, but, you know, I still have that whole life thing!

So here's the opening paragraphs.
When compared to the numerous investigations of political violence in political science, research on state-initiated mass murder against ethnic groups receives a conspicuous inattention. Explaining political violence among citizens during peacetime is the traditional purview of the ethnic conflict literature. For scholars of ethnic conflict, the sources and proponents of violence are either fellow citizens or political parties, competing for some combination of political security and goods, stemming from party competition and politicized cleavages within those societies. In contrast, the literature concerning ethnic violence against civilians conceives of the perpetrators as states and organized militias, rather than fellow citizens, and theorizes the violence as peculiar to wartime. With the exception of some elements within the marginalized literature on genocide and mass killing, few theorists account for political violence against civilians in peacetime.
What explains victimization rates among resident ethnic groups in Democratic Kampuchea during the rule of the Khmer Rouge? The literature on political violence has left us with few answers but many clues for this puzzle. In this paper, I read the occurrence of prevalent mass killings in Democratic Kampuchea against four important arguments: —(i) Benjamin Valentino’s and Manus Midlarsky’s strategic theories of anti-civilian mass killing, (ii) Macartan Humphrey and Jeremy Weinstein’s disorganization of militant insurgents, (iii) Stathis Kalyvas’s militant competition and rationalist signaling, and (iv) Michael Mann’s, Valentino’s and Midlarsky’s beliefs about communist ideology —to further refine our scientific understandings of mass civilian death. Along with strategic theories of mass death, I argue that while the length of time available to perpetrators to accomplish policy objectives best explains the onset of mass anti-civilian violence, the jurisdictions of regime political authority and whether the regime foresees the target group as a part of its future state best predicts the geographic scope and intensity of the violence. Using these two concepts, I sketch a framework for investigating peacetime anti-civilian violence. My intention in this paper is only to check the plausibility of a tentative rubric, not to expound a full theory of anti-civilian violence, or even anti-civilian violence in post-revolutionary contexts. |

Currently writing on Democratic Kampuchea (Pol Pot's Cambodia).
Took test for distraction.
You love to be around people. Without them, you would wilt and fade away. Too much time alone leave you feeling listless and sad, but a good night out with your buddies puts the spring back into your step. You make friends easily, because you know how to adjust your behaviour for each person. With a rowdy, loud, social type of person you can be rowdy, and loud, and social. With a timid and mousy person you can be quiet and sensitive. While you have many friends and many faces, you have an inner circle of friends and family with whom you can truly be yourself.
You are a natural leader. You tend to be calm and rational, and it is rare that you get angry or upset. Often, when someone accidentally hurts your feelings, you will smile and pretend not to be bothered by it, because you want to project a positive, self confident image. You pick your battles. When someone does cross the line, they are often surprised at the sudden strength of your defensive attack. On the rare occasion that someone evokes anger or tears from you, it seems to them that this storm burst from clear blue skies.
Your daemon would represent your social, outgoing nature, your adaptable presence, and your tendency to hide your sensitive spots from strangers. He or she would help you mold yourself to every variety of social situation, being calm or playful or frightening as each situation demanded. When alone together, he or she would be someone whom you could share your real feelings with.
Suggested Forms: Lion, Orca, Chimpanzee, African Elephant, Goldfinch. |
